Give a toy to a peer when asked or offer a trade

When to use this goal

For young students who hold onto every toy, cry when asked to share, or take toys from peers. Base the choice on observation during centers. Sharing is taught with structure (timers, trades, duplicates) so it is fair, not forced.

Baseline
Observe centers for 3 sessions and record each peer request for the student's toy and the response: hands it over, offers a trade or a wait, refuses calmly, cries, or hits. Set up 3 structured sharing trials with a timer. Note which toys are hardest to share; start with easier ones.
Tips
An opportunity is a peer request or trade offer, or the end of a sharing timer. Score correct when the student hands over the toy, offers a trade, or says when the peer can have it and then follows through, within 10 seconds and without crying, hitting, or grabbing. Saying "when I'm done" counts only if the handover follows. Teach peers to ask rather than take, and keep the turn the student gives up short.
Limits
Sharing on demand is not always fair; the plan should protect the student's turns too. Peer requests are unpredictable; structured practice supplies steady data. Does not measure the student asking for toys (see se-cr-009 and se-com-021).

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, when a peer asks for a toy they are using during centers or free play, the student will give the toy to the peer, or offer a trade or say "when I'm done" and hand it over when the timer ends independently in at least 4 of 5 opportunities, across 3 consecutive data collection days, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected three times per week during centers.

  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Opportunities fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Opportunity (trial) recording gives opportunities data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Play & Social Participation.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.

Short-term objectives (optional)

When are objectives required?

Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.
