Play at a new or non-preferred center for several minutes
When to use this goal
For young students who play at only one center or with one toy, so that most of the classroom is unused and peers at other centers are never met. Base the choice on center observation. The preferred center stays available; this goal adds others.
- Baseline
- Record which centers the student visits over a week and how long they stay at each. Time 3 attempts at a non-preferred center with current supports. Note which new centers hold interest longest; start there, and bring a preferred item along.
- Tips
- Timing starts when the student begins using the center's materials and stops when they leave or stop playing for more than 30 seconds. Bringing a preferred item to the new center is a support, not an error. Rotate through new centers slowly; one new center per week is enough. Always honor the return to the preferred center shown on the schedule.
- Limits
- Non-preferred centers may be non-preferred for sensory reasons (noise, textures); check with the OT. Duration shows presence, not learning; note what the student did. Strong interests are strengths; this goal broadens options without replacing them.
