Join the actions of circle-time songs and group games
When to use this goal
For young students who sit at circle but do not join the actions, or who leave circle during songs and games. Base the choice on circle-time observation. Partial actions and actions done a beat late count; the aim is participation, not precision.
- Baseline
- For 3 circle times, record each song or game and whether the student joined any of its actions, watched only, or left. Note which songs draw the most participation; familiar, repetitive songs with big actions usually work best. Check seating; a spot beside an adult or a calm peer helps.
- Tips
- Each song or game is an opportunity (sample the first 5 per day). Score correct when the student performs at least one of its actions in roughly the right place, in any form their body allows. Late or approximate actions count. A student who vocalizes along but does not move can count if the team agrees. Sitting still and watching is not an error, but is recorded separately.
- Limits
- Participation depends on the song and the group's energy; keep a core set of songs across data points. Motor differences shape what actions look like; adapt them with the OT or PT. Does not measure attention to the leader or peers beyond the action.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, during circle time when the group sings an action song or plays a group game (such as a passing game, a movement game), the student will join the action of the song or game (such as clapping, standing, passing the object, doing the motion) for at least part of it independently in at least 4 of 5 opportunities, across 3 consecutive data collection days, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected daily during circle time.

- Record up to 5 opportunities per session, matching the goal's denominator.
- Define in advance what counts as an opportunity so every data collector records the same thing.
- Count only + marks toward the criterion unless the goal specifies prompted responses.
