Pick an outdoor play area from a photo board
When to use this goal
For preschoolers who stand by the door, stay near an adult, or run without a plan when they go outside. Base the choice on playground observation. The photo board shows the real areas on the student's playground (slide, sandbox, bikes, swings) so the choice matches what is there.
- Baseline
- For 5 outdoor times, show the board and record whether the student chose, went to the chosen area, or did neither. Note which areas the student goes to without the board. Take photos of the actual playground.
- Tips
- Each outdoor play time is an opportunity. Score correct when the student makes a choice and reaches the chosen area within about a minute. Any choice is right; a student who picks the swings every day is still choosing. Watch for areas that are too loud or crowded and add quieter options.
- Limits
- Weather and closed areas change the choices; adjust the board daily. The goal does not measure play once the student arrives.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, at the start of outdoor play when an adult shows a photo board of 3 or 4 outdoor areas, the student will choose an outdoor play area by pointing to, saying, signing, or selecting its photo and then go to that area independently in at least 4 of 5 opportunities, across 2 consecutive weeks, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected daily at outdoor play.

- Record up to 5 opportunities per session, matching the goal's denominator.
- Define in advance what counts as an opportunity so every data collector records the same thing.
- Count only + marks toward the criterion unless the goal specifies prompted responses.
