Play a card or strategy game with peers at lunch

When to use this goal

For middle school students who spend lunch or advisory free time alone but say they would like to do something with peers. Card games, strategy games, and puzzle games give structure that makes joining easier. Base the choice on what the student wants and on what games peers already play.

Baseline
Observe 3 lunch or free periods and record how many minutes the student spends in a shared game. Ask the student which games they know or want to learn and which peers they get along with.
Tips
Time from the first move until the student leaves or stops playing for 2 minutes. Taking breaks is fine. Use games peers already play so the student has partners after the goal ends. Adults stay in the background.
Limits
Peers, games, and lunch schedules change often; keep the setting steady during checks. The goal does not measure friendship or conversation at the table.
