Ask for help during a virtual class using the platform tools
When to use this goal
For students who ask for help in person but disappear in virtual classes, online tutoring, or learning platforms, where a raised hand or help card does not exist. Base the choice on online participation data. Tools include the raise-hand button, chat, a help ticket, or unmuting.
- Baseline
- Review chat and participation logs from recent virtual sessions for help requests, and compare with in-person requests. Run 3 planned moments in a virtual session where help is clearly needed and record the student's response: tool used, message sent, camera off and silent, or left the session.
- Tips
- An opportunity is a verified stuck moment during a virtual session (planned or shown by no progress on the shared screen or module). Score correct when the student uses any platform tool to ask within 2 minutes and names what they need. Teachers should respond to chat requests promptly and aloud so the student sees it worked. Practice the tools during a low-stakes session first.
- Limits
- Platform logs show requests but not stuck moments, so planned prompts are needed for the denominator. Connectivity and device problems look like silence; check them (see se-rh-015). Virtual classes may be rare in some schools; use online modules in class as the setting if so.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, during a live virtual class when they do not follow a direction or task, the student will ask for help using a platform tool (raise-hand button, chat message, or unmuting) and state what they need independently in at least 4 of 5 opportunities, across 3 consecutive virtual sessions, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected each virtual session, confirmed with platform logs.
Baseline: 0 of 5 opportunities.

Met: Condition. Stated.
Met: Unit fits the behavior. Opportunities fits this behavior.
Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.
Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.
Met: Method produces the metric. Opportunity (trial) recording gives opportunities data.
Met: Review timeframe. Stated.
Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.
Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Requesting Help.
Met: Level of support. Defined.
Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.
Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
Short-term objectives (optional)
When are objectives required?Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.

- Record up to 5 opportunities per session, matching the goal's denominator.
- Define in advance what counts as an opportunity so every data collector records the same thing.
- Count only + marks toward the criterion unless the goal specifies prompted responses.
