Ask the librarian for help finding a source

6-8, 9-12OpportunitiesTemplateReview and individualize before use. How templates are made
When to use this goal

For students who give up on research or pick the first website because they do not ask library staff for help. Present levels in research tasks decide fit. Requests can be spoken, written, typed in a library chat, or sent by email.

Baseline
During 1 or 2 research projects, note the times the student was stuck finding sources and whether they asked library staff, a peer, or no one. Ask the librarian to share a tally.
Tips
An opportunity is a time the student cannot find a source they need. Score correct when the request names the topic and kind of source. Library staff are a lifelong help resource; this goal carries into college and public libraries.
Limits
Research projects come only a few times a year, so data are spread out. The goal does not measure research quality.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, during a research project in the school library or media center, the student will ask the librarian or media specialist for help by naming the topic and the kind of source they need independently in at least 3 of 4 opportunities, across 2 consecutive research projects, as measured by direct observation collected during each research project.

Baseline: 0 of 4 opportunities.

  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Opportunities fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Direct observation gives opportunities data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Requesting Help.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.
