Find a word on the device by navigating to its folder
When to use this goal
For students whose vocabulary is spread across pages or folders and who can only find words on the home page. Navigation (two or three hits to reach a word) is a motor and memory skill that limits everything else. Base the choice on the device layout.
- Baseline
- Ask for 20 words at different depths and record whether the student finds each, how many wrong hits occur, and how long it takes. Note which folders are already known. Confirm the layout is stable; moving buttons resets learning.
- Tips
- Score correct when the student reaches the named word within about 10 seconds with no more than one wrong hit. Keep the layout fixed and consistent across the device and any paper backup. Teach navigation inside real activities as well as in drills. Record the path (folder names) so all partners model the same route.
- Limits
- Finding a word on request is not the same as choosing to use it. Motor access difficulties can look like navigation problems; check access first (sl-aac-023). Layout changes invalidate baseline data.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, given 20 spoken words from the device's vocabulary that are two hits away from the home page (such as "Find 'apple'"), the student will navigate to the folder and select the word independently with at least 85% accuracy on words located on the device, across 3 consecutive therapy sessions, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected weekly.
Baseline: 30% accuracy.

Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.
Met: Condition. Stated.
Met: Unit fits the behavior. Percent accuracy fits this behavior.
Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.
Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.
Met: Method produces the metric. Opportunity (trial) recording gives percent accuracy data.
Met: Review timeframe. Stated.
Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.
Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about AAC & Augmentative Communication.
Met: Level of support. Defined.
Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.
Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
Short-term objectives (optional)
When are objectives required?Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.

- Score only items the student attempted unless the goal defines a fixed set of items. Use the same denominator every session.
- Percent = numerator ÷ denominator × 100. Round to one decimal place.
- Record the support actually provided, even if the goal is independent performance.
