Compose messages faster with word prediction
When to use this goal
For literate AAC users who type letter by letter and compose so slowly that classes and conversations move on. Word prediction and stored phrases can raise the rate. Base the choice on a timed composing sample, typing access, and how fast the student reads the prediction list.
- Baseline
- Run three 3-minute timings with prediction off and three with it on, and count words a reader can identify. Note how often the student uses predictions; some students do not look at the list. Check access settings with the OT.
- Tips
- Count correct words (readable and intended) per minute over the timing. Report the median of three timings. Spelling errors that still read as the intended word count as correct words. Pair with a quality goal; speed alone is not the aim.
- Limits
- Rate depends on access method, fatigue, and topic. Prediction suits some students and slows others; compare before committing.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, during a 3-minute timed composition answering a familiar question such as "Tell about your weekend" (total divided by 3 for the per-minute rate), the student will compose a message on the device keyboard using word prediction to select words independently at a rate of at least 7 correct words per minute, across 3 consecutive weekly probes, using the median of 3 timings, as measured by timed probes collected weekly.
Baseline: 3 correct words per minute.

Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.
Met: Condition. Stated.
Met: Unit fits the behavior. Rate (per minute) fits this behavior.
Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.
Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.
Met: Method produces the metric. Timed probes gives rate (per minute) data.
Met: Review timeframe. Stated.
Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.
Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about AAC & Augmentative Communication.
Met: Level of support. Defined.
Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.
Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
Short-term objectives (optional)
When are objectives required?Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.
