Choose the right picture from the book page
When to use this goal
For students who travel to the book and partner reliably with one picture and are ready to pick the picture that matches what they want from two or more. A check of correspondence (offering the items and seeing which one the student takes) shows the picture choice was meaningful. Present levels and exchange data, not grade, decide fit.
- Baseline
- Run 10 to 20 exchanges with two pictures and offer both items after each exchange; record whether the student takes the item that matches the picture. Start with one preferred and one non-preferred picture before using two preferred pictures. Note whether the student scans the page or always picks the same position.
- Tips
- Score correct when the student exchanges a picture and then takes the item that matches it. If the student hands over a picture but reaches for a different item, honor the reach and model the matching picture, then score the trial as incorrect. Move picture positions every trial so position does not drive the choice. Add pictures slowly as accuracy holds.
- Limits
- Accuracy depends on how much the student wants the items; changing preferences can lower scores without a skill change. Choosing from a small page does not show navigating a large book or device. The template does not prescribe a specific program and does not diagnose.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, given a communication book page with a preferred and a non-preferred picture during snack or play, the student will pick the picture of the wanted item from the page, give it to the partner, and take the matching item when offered a choice independently with at least 85% accuracy on picture exchanges matching the item the student takes, across 3 consecutive data collection days, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected daily during snack or play.
Baseline: 40% accuracy.

Short-term objectives (optional)
When are objectives required?Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.

- Score only items the student attempted unless the goal defines a fixed set of items. Use the same denominator every session.
- Percent = numerator ÷ denominator × 100. Round to one decimal place.
- Record the support actually provided, even if the goal is independent performance.
