Say medial and final /v/ clearly

K-2, 3-5Percent accuracyTemplateReview and individualize before use. How templates are made
When to use this goal

For students who make /v/ at the start of words but replace it with /b/ or /f/ in the middle and at the end ("sebben" for seven, "glub" for glove). Base the choice on a probe by position. Present levels, not grade, decide fit.

Baseline
Probe /v/ by position and record /b/ for /v/ separately from /f/ for /v/. Final /v/ is often partly devoiced in natural English, so decide in advance whether a lightly devoiced /v/ counts.
Tips
Score correct when the lip-teeth contact and friction are heard. Number words give natural daily practice in math. For speakers of languages without /v/ (for example, some speakers of Spanish or Korean), treat /b/ for /v/ as a possible language pattern and check with the family and a bilingual colleague.
Limits
Structured tasks only. Many listeners do not notice a /v/ error in context, so the effect on intelligibility may be small; weigh this before writing the goal for an older student.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, given 10 sentences, each with two words containing medial or final /v/, the student will say each sentence with medial and final /v/ produced correctly independently with at least 85% accuracy on medial and final /v/ productions, across 3 consecutive therapy sessions, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected during each therapy session.

Baseline: 40% accuracy.

Measurability check11 of 11 met
  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Percent accuracy fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Opportunity (trial) recording gives percent accuracy data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Articulation.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.

Short-term objectives (optional)

When are objectives required?

Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.
