Rate own recorded words as right or wrong
When to use this goal
For students who are starting to produce the target sound correctly but cannot yet tell when their own production is right. Listening to a recording and rating each word is a first self-monitoring step that comes before live self-correction. Base the choice on the student's word-level accuracy and discrimination data.
- Baseline
- Have the student rate 10 recorded words and compare each rating with the SLP's. Make sure the recordings include some incorrect productions; a set of all-correct words cannot show whether the student hears errors.
- Tips
- Each recorded word is one trial, scored correct when the student's rating matches the SLP's. Score each rating correct when it matches the SLP's. Use the student's own words for right and wrong ("strong /r/", "smooth s"). Ratings on own speech are harder than on the SLP's speech (sl-art-006). Pair with live self-correction later (sl-art-005).
- Limits
- Rating a recording after the fact is easier than catching errors while speaking. Some students rate everything as correct to avoid disappointment; keep the tone neutral and praise accurate ratings, not correct sounds.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, after recording themselves saying 10 target-sound words during the session, the student will rate each recorded word as correct or not correct to match the SLP's judgment independently in at least 9 of 10 trials, across 3 consecutive therapy sessions, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected during each therapy session.
Baseline: 5 of 10 opportunities.

Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.
Met: Condition. Stated.
Met: Unit fits the behavior. Opportunities fits this behavior.
Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.
Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.
Met: Method produces the metric. Opportunity (trial) recording gives opportunities data.
Met: Review timeframe. Stated.
Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.
Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Articulation.
Met: Level of support. Defined.
Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.
Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
Short-term objectives (optional)
When are objectives required?Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.

- Record up to 10 opportunities per session, matching the goal's denominator.
- Define in advance what counts as an opportunity so every data collector records the same thing.
- Count only + marks toward the criterion unless the goal specifies prompted responses.
