Find and name target-sound pictures in a scene
When to use this goal
For young children accurate in imitated words who are ready to name target-sound words without a model. A busy picture scene or a hidden-picture game asks the child to find the items and name them, which is more natural than flashcards. Base the choice on imitation data (sl-art-008).
- Baseline
- Make sure the child knows the names of the items first; a child who does not know "saddle" cannot show the sound in it. Score each naming for the target sound and note any items the child needed help to name.
- Tips
- Each item named is one trial, scored correct when the target sound is produced correctly. Score the target sound in each item named. If the child names an item with a different word, accept it and model the target word. Choose items the child cares about. The play-scene condition can run with a peer for more natural turns.
- Limits
- Word level only, and vocabulary knowledge affects scores. Young children's attention limits trial counts; spread trials across the session.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, given a picture scene with 10 hidden target-sound items, the student will name each target-sound item they find with the target sound produced correctly independently in at least 8 of 10 trials, across 3 consecutive therapy sessions, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected during each therapy session.
Baseline: 3 of 10 opportunities.

Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.
Met: Condition. Stated.
Met: Unit fits the behavior. Opportunities fits this behavior.
Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.
Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.
Met: Method produces the metric. Opportunity (trial) recording gives opportunities data.
Met: Review timeframe. Stated.
Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.
Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Articulation.
Met: Level of support. Defined.
Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.
Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
Short-term objectives (optional)
When are objectives required?Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.

- Record up to 10 opportunities per session, matching the goal's denominator.
- Define in advance what counts as an opportunity so every data collector records the same thing.
- Count only + marks toward the criterion unless the goal specifies prompted responses.
