Write down key details from a voicemail
When to use this goal
For secondary and transition-age students who need to take phone or voicemail messages at home, at school, or at work but miss names, numbers, or times. Base the choice on a probe with recorded messages and the student's transition needs.
- Baseline
- Play three or four messages of similar length and speed and score each detail. Note whether numbers or names cause the most errors and whether the student asks to replay. Use real-sounding voices with ordinary speed.
- Tips
- Score each detail as right or wrong; a phone number with one wrong digit is wrong, because that is what matters in real life. Replaying is a real-world strategy and is allowed; record it as the support. Use messages from the student's actual job or program when possible.
- Limits
- Recorded messages are clearer than many real ones. The goal measures catching details, not returning the call (see sl-prag-016 for phone calls).

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, after listening to a 20- to 40-second recorded voicemail with a name, a phone number, a time, and a reason for calling, the student will write or type the caller's name, call-back number, time or date, and reason for calling independently with at least 90% accuracy on message details recorded correctly, in 3 of 4 consecutive weekly probes, as measured by work-sample analysis collected weekly.
Baseline: 50% accuracy.

Short-term objectives (optional)
When are objectives required?Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.

- Score only items the student attempted unless the goal defines a fixed set of items. Use the same denominator every session.
- Percent = numerator ÷ denominator × 100. Round to one decimal place.
- Record the support actually provided, even if the goal is independent performance.
