Say untrained words in mixed practice

K-2, 3-5Percent accuracyTemplateReview and individualize before use. How templates are made
When to use this goal

For students who do well on drilled words in blocked practice but lose accuracy when words are mixed or new. Present levels and practice data decide fit. The target shape is the one the student is working on (CVC, CVCV, or three syllables).

Baseline
Build the untrained list before practice begins and never practice it. Score first tries only. Compare with the practiced-word data from the same week to see how much carries over.
Tips
Score only untrained words for this goal. Mixed, varied practice helps motor learning carry over even though it feels harder in the session. Fewer feedback statements during practice (not after every word) also support carryover.
Limits
This goal measures transfer, so it moves slowly. It cannot show whether a specific word is ready to use in class; check that in carryover data (sl-ms-006, sl-ms-027).

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, given 15 untrained words of the target syllable shape mixed in random order with 5 practiced words, the student will say each untrained word with all sounds and syllables correct and in order on the first try independently with at least 65% accuracy on untrained words in a mixed set, in 3 of 4 consecutive weekly probes, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected weekly.

Baseline: 30% accuracy.

Measurability check11 of 11 met
  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Percent accuracy fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Opportunity (trial) recording gives percent accuracy data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Motor Speech (Apraxia & Dysarthria).

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.

Short-term objectives (optional)

When are objectives required?

Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.
