Signal how ideas connect in an informational retell
When to use this goal
For students who include facts in informational retells but do not show how the facts relate. Signal words for sequence, cause, contrast, and example make expository talk easy to follow. Base the choice on scored expository retells. For linking words in stories, see sl-nar-007.
- Baseline
- Record five informational retells and count signal words that fit the relationship. Score a retell correct when it has at least two fitting signal words. Note signal words used with the wrong meaning.
- Tips
- Each retell is one opportunity, scored correct when it includes at least two signal words that fit how the ideas relate. Words used only as fillers ("and so, and so") do not count. Any language or mode counts.
- Limits
- Passage structure affects which words are possible; keep passage types balanced. The count does not show how much content was recalled.

By the annual IEP review date, during 5 retells of short informational passages with clear structures, the student will use signal words that match the relationship between ideas (such as first, because, as a result, however, for example) independently in at least 4 of 5 opportunities, in 3 of 4 consecutive biweekly probes, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected every two weeks.

- Record up to 5 opportunities per session, matching the goal's denominator.
- Define in advance what counts as an opportunity so every data collector records the same thing.
- Count only + marks toward the criterion unless the goal specifies prompted responses.
