Tell a family member about the school day

K-2, 3-5OpportunitiesTemplateReview and individualize before use. How templates are made
When to use this goal

For students who answer "What did you do at school?" with "Nothing" or one word, which families often name as a top concern. With a picture or a short note from school as a cue, the student tells two or three events in order. Base the choice on family report and school narrative data.

Baseline
Ask the family to note for one week what the student says when asked about school, without cues. Then add the story map and compare. Agree with the family on a time of day that works for them.
Tips
Each day on the log is one opportunity. Families talk in whatever language they use at home, and telling in the home language counts fully. Keep the log to check boxes and a short note. Specific questions work better than "How was your day?"; share a few with families.
Limits
Family logs are less precise than school data and are reported separately. Busy weeks happen; partial logs are still useful. The student's privacy about the day is respected.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, at home after school, using a photo or a 3-picture story map sent home from school, recorded by a family member on a 5-day log, the student will tell a family member about two or three events from the school day in order independently in at least 4 of 5 opportunities, on 3 of 4 consecutive weekly home logs, as measured by direct observation collected weekly from the family's home log.

  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Opportunities fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Direct observation gives opportunities data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Narrative Language & Retelling.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
