Say the cycle's practice words during play turns
When to use this goal
For preschool and kindergarten children in a cycles approach who need many short practice turns with the week's 3 to 5 target words inside a game. Base the choice on the SLP's phonological analysis and on which words the child can produce with a model. This template measures production practice during the session.
- Baseline
- Pick practice words the child can say with the pattern when given a model and cues; in cycles, words should be within reach. Record the first 20 turns of a session and the support used for each.
- Tips
- Each turn is one trial, scored correct when the target pattern is present; record the support level for each trial. Choose words the child can draw or picture easily. Change words and the pattern according to the cycle plan, not according to whether this goal is met in a given week.
- Limits
- Session practice with a model is the most supported level. Look to the untrained word probe (sl-phon-021) for whether the pattern is generalizing.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, during a game (such as fishing, a ramp, or a stacking toy) in which each turn uses one of the cycle's 3 to 5 practice words, the student will say the practice word with the target pattern on each turn after an imitative model from the SLP in at least 16 of 20 trials, across 2 consecutive sessions in each cycle, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected during each therapy session.
Baseline: 8 of 20 opportunities.

Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.
Met: Condition. Stated.
Met: Unit fits the behavior. Opportunities fits this behavior.
Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.
Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.
Met: Method produces the metric. Opportunity (trial) recording gives opportunities data.
Met: Review timeframe. Stated.
Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.
Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Phonological Processes.
Met: Level of support. Defined.
Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.
Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
Short-term objectives (optional)
When are objectives required?Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.

- Record up to 10 opportunities per session, matching the goal's denominator.
- Define in advance what counts as an opportunity so every data collector records the same thing.
- Count only + marks toward the criterion unless the goal specifies prompted responses.
