Greet and say goodbye to familiar people

PK, K-2OpportunitiesTemplateReview and individualize before use. How templates are made
When to use this goal

For young students who do not yet return or offer a greeting when someone they know says hello or leaves, and who want a way to connect. Base the choice on observation at arrival and dismissal and family input. Works with speech, sign, a wave, or an AAC message.

Baseline
Record the first five greetings directed to the student each day for a week and whether the student responded in any mode within 5 seconds. Note who the student greets spontaneously, if anyone. Ask the family what greeting the child uses at home and in the home language; any form counts.
Tips
Each greeting or farewell directed to the student is one opportunity; score the first five per day. Score correct when any recognizable greeting response occurs within 5 seconds, in any mode. Score the message only; do not score eye contact, facial expression, posture, or tone of voice. Greeting is a choice; a student who declines to greet an unfamiliar adult is not scored as incorrect. Build in natural greetings rather than drilling.
Limits
Opportunities vary by day and depend on adults greeting the student by name. Greeting routines can become rote; the aim is connection, so watch for whether the student uses greetings with peers they like. Does not measure conversation beyond the greeting.
