Contribute an idea during small-group discussion
When to use this goal
For students who say little in small-group academic discussions even when they know the content, or whose comments are unrelated to the question. Base the choice on observation and teacher report. Contributions in speech, AAC, typed chat, or a written card read aloud all count.
- Baseline
- Tally related contributions in three discussions and note how often the student was invited, interrupted, or talked over. Ask the teacher about the group's norms; a group without turn structure gives fewer chances. Ask the student what makes speaking in groups hard.
- Tips
- Count each related contribution. A question about the topic counts. Processing time matters: let the student prepare ideas in advance. Co-plan with the teacher so group roles or talk moves create openings.
- Limits
- Group dynamics strongly affect counts. More talk is not the aim for every student; agree on a target that matches the student's own wishes. This goal does not score the quality of ideas.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, during a 15-minute small-group discussion of a text or topic in the general education classroom, the student will contribute an idea, answer, or question that relates to the discussion question independently at least 3 times per 15-minute small-group discussion, across 3 consecutive weekly observations, as measured by frequency recording collected weekly.
Baseline: 0 times per 15-minute small-group discussion.

Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.
Met: Condition. Stated.
Met: Unit fits the behavior. Frequency fits this behavior.
Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.
Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.
Met: Method produces the metric. Frequency (event) recording gives frequency data.
Met: Review timeframe. Stated.
Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.
Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Pragmatic Language.
Met: Level of support. Defined.
Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.
Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
Short-term objectives (optional)
When are objectives required?Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.

- Count each occurrence of the defined behavior per 15-minute small-group discussion.
- Keep the observation length the same each session. If it varies, compare rate per minute, not raw counts.
- Write the behavior definition at the top of the sheet so all data collectors count the same thing.
