Pause to invite a partner's turn

When to use this goal

For students who share long, detailed turns about a topic and have told the SLP they want partners to stay in the conversation. Base the choice on a conversation sample and the student's own goal. Long, detailed sharing is a valid style; this template gives the student a tool to use when they choose.

Baseline
Record five extended turns in a conversation sample and whether the student offered the partner a turn. Ask the student what partners usually do during their long turns and whether they want to change anything. Do not set this goal if the student does not want it.
Tips
An extended turn (several sentences on one topic) is one opportunity; score correct when the student offers a turn. Coach partners, too: a partner can say "Can I add something?" and that shared responsibility is part of the plan.
Limits
The right turn length depends on the relationship and setting; close friends who share an interest may welcome long turns. Does not measure topic relevance.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, during a 5-minute conversation with the SLP on the student's favorite topic, the student will pause after a few sentences and invite the partner in with a question or a check (such as "Have you seen it?" or "Want to hear more?") independently in at least 4 of 5 opportunities, across 3 consecutive therapy sessions, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected during each therapy session and every two weeks with peers.

Baseline: 1 of 5 opportunities.

  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Opportunities fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Opportunity (trial) recording gives opportunities data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Pragmatic Language.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
