Speak from note cards in own words
When to use this goal
For upper elementary students who write their whole talk on cards and read it aloud with their head down, or who freeze without a full script. Present levels, not grade, decide fit. The student needs to read the keywords on the card; use picture cues if reading is not yet steady.
- Baseline
- Watch two talks given from the student's own cards and mark each card as said in own words or read aloud as written. Look at the cards too: if every card holds a paragraph, the first step is rewriting cards, not delivery.
- Tips
- Each card is one opportunity. Score it when the student glances at the card and then gives the point in words not written on it; reading a word or two is fine. Teach card writing alongside delivery: one keyword, a picture if helpful, large print. Never score eye contact, posture, or stillness, and never count stuttering, AAC use, an accent or dialect, or harmless movement against the student.
- Limits
- Does not measure whether the points are correct or well organized. Some students need a full script as an accommodation (for example, during a speech sound or fluency phase); this goal does not fit then.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, when giving a class talk from three to five note cards, each holding a keyword or short phrase, the student will independently look at the keyword on each card, then say the point in their own words without reading a full sentence aloud in at least 4 of 5 opportunities, on 3 of 4 consecutive presentation probes, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected every two weeks.
Baseline: 1 of 5 opportunities.

When are objectives required?Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.

- Record up to 5 opportunities per session, matching the goal's denominator.
- Define in advance what counts as an opportunity so every data collector records the same thing.
- Count only + marks toward the criterion unless the goal specifies prompted responses.
