Talk about each slide instead of reading it

When to use this goal

For middle school students who put full paragraphs on slides and read them aloud facing the screen. Present levels and recorded presentations, not grade, decide fit. Works best once the student can build a short slide deck.

Baseline
Record two slide presentations and mark each slide as explained or read aloud word for word. Check the slides themselves: count the words per slide, since a slide packed with text invites reading.
Tips
One slide is one opportunity; title and closing slides are left out. Score it when the student's spoken words go beyond reading the bullet points. Turning toward listeners is part of the behavior, but where they look is not scored. Never score eye contact, posture, or stillness, and never count stuttering, AAC use, an accent or dialect, or harmless movement against the student.
Limits
Slide design is often the real barrier; teach it first or pair with a writing goal. Does not measure accuracy of content, which the content teacher judges.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, when presenting a slide deck of four to six slides that each hold a title and no more than three short bullet points, the student will glance at the slide, turn toward the listeners, and explain the slide's point in their own words independently in at least 5 of 6 opportunities, on 3 of 4 consecutive presentations, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected every two weeks.

Baseline: 1 of 6 opportunities.

  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Opportunities fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Opportunity (trial) recording gives opportunities data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Oral Presentation & Public Speaking.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.

Short-term objectives (optional)

When are objectives required?

Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.
