Check for questions at planned stopping points
When to use this goal
For middle school students who present without ever pausing for listeners, so classmates tune out or questions pile up at the end. Present levels, not grade, decide fit. Engagement here is measured through actions the student chooses, never eye contact.
- Baseline
- Watch two presentations and note whether the student ever paused for listeners. Agree with the student on the stopping points and the words they will use before collecting baseline on the marked version.
- Tips
- Each marked stopping point is one opportunity. Turning the body or head toward listeners is enough; where the student looks is never scored. Ask the student to choose their own check-in phrase. Never score eye contact, posture, or stillness, and never count stuttering, AAC use, an accent or dialect, or harmless movement against the student.
- Limits
- Measures a planned engagement move, not whether the audience was interested. Does not measure the content or organization of the presentation.

- Record up to 3 opportunities per session, matching the goal's denominator.
- Define in advance what counts as an opportunity so every data collector records the same thing.
- Count only + marks toward the criterion unless the goal specifies prompted responses.
