Deliver a talk with a speech-generating device
When to use this goal
For students who use a speech-generating device or app and have a few messages stored for a class talk but need an adult to run them. Present levels and the AAC assessment, not grade, decide fit. The talk is the student's own content, planned with them.
- Baseline
- In two rehearsals, record each stored message: selected by the student in order, selected with a prompt, or selected by an adult. Check access first (page layout, button size, switch timing) so the data show the skill, not an access barrier.
- Tips
- Each stored message is one opportunity. Program messages in the student's chosen voice and words, and let them add a greeting or joke. A device talk is a full presentation and is graded as one. Never score eye contact, posture, or stillness, and never count stuttering, AAC use, an accent or dialect, or harmless movement against the student.
- Limits
- Stored messages show sequencing and delivery, not novel language; pair with a core vocabulary goal. Device or access problems on the day can lower scores, so note them.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, when giving a class talk from a page of four to six messages stored in order on their device, the student will select each stored message in order to deliver the talk, waiting for listeners to hear one message before selecting the next independently in at least 5 of 6 opportunities, on 3 of 4 consecutive presentation probes, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected every two weeks.
Baseline: 2 of 6 opportunities.

Short-term objectives (optional)
When are objectives required?Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.

- Record up to 6 opportunities per session, matching the goal's denominator.
- Define in advance what counts as an opportunity so every data collector records the same thing.
- Count only + marks toward the criterion unless the goal specifies prompted responses.
