Match a question word to the kind of answer it needs
When to use this goal
For students who answer wh- questions with the wrong kind of information (a place for who, a person for when), which shows they do not yet know what each question word asks for. Base the choice on question-answering data by type. Comes before or alongside sl-exp-007.
- Baseline
- Ask 10 questions per question word (who, what, where, when, why) with picture answer choices and record accuracy by word; who, what, and where usually come first. Note whether the student picks the most salient picture regardless of the question, which means the question word is not being used.
- Tips
- List the question words in the condition. Score correct when the selected answer is the right type and fits the picture on the first try. Answer choices must be equally plausible except for type, so the student must use the question word. Use untrained questions for probes.
- Limits
- Picture answer choices work for who, what, where, and when but poorly for why and how; those need spoken or written choices. Chance in a field of three is 33%. The goal is recognition only; expressive answering is sl-exp-007.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, given 10 spoken wh- questions about a picture and a field of three answer pictures (a person, a place, a time or object), for each question, the student will select the answer picture that gives the kind of information the question word asks for independently with at least 85% accuracy on question word items, across 3 consecutive therapy sessions, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected during each therapy session.
Baseline: 40% accuracy.

Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.
Met: Condition. Stated.
Met: Unit fits the behavior. Percent accuracy fits this behavior.
Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.
Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.
Met: Method produces the metric. Opportunity (trial) recording gives percent accuracy data.
Met: Review timeframe. Stated.
Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.
Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Receptive Language.
Met: Level of support. Defined.
Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.
Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
Short-term objectives (optional)
When are objectives required?Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.

- Score only items the student attempted unless the goal defines a fixed set of items. Use the same denominator every session.
- Percent = numerator ÷ denominator × 100. Round to one decimal place.
- Record the support actually provided, even if the goal is independent performance.
