Name a word that goes with a given word
When to use this goal
For students whose word networks are thin, so they struggle to connect related words (shoe and sock, rain and umbrella), which slows retrieval and comprehension. Base the choice on the SLP's assessment.
- Baseline
- Probe 20 words with clear everyday associations and record each answer and the explanation. Note whether the student can select an associated picture but not produce one, which points to retrieval rather than knowledge. Check that the words are familiar from the student's experience.
- Tips
- Score correct when the named word has a clear link the student can state ("sock, because you wear them both on your feet"); any sensible association counts, not only the one on the answer key. Unrelated words or a repeat of the stimulus are incorrect. Keep a record of accepted answers so scoring stays consistent between sessions.
- Limits
- Associations vary with culture and experience, so some "wrong" answers are reasonable; the explanation requirement protects against guessing but adds an expressive demand. The task does not measure vocabulary size.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, given 10 spoken words and asked "What goes with ___?", the student will name a word that is commonly associated with the given word and say how they go together independently with at least 80% accuracy on association items, across 3 consecutive therapy sessions, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected during each therapy session.
Baseline: 30% accuracy.

Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.
Met: Condition. Stated.
Met: Unit fits the behavior. Percent accuracy fits this behavior.
Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.
Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.
Met: Method produces the metric. Opportunity (trial) recording gives percent accuracy data.
Met: Review timeframe. Stated.
Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.
Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Vocabulary & Semantics.
Met: Level of support. Defined.
Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.
Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
Short-term objectives (optional)
When are objectives required?Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.

- Score only items the student attempted unless the goal defines a fixed set of items. Use the same denominator every session.
- Percent = numerator ÷ denominator × 100. Round to one decimal place.
- Record the support actually provided, even if the goal is independent performance.
