Retrieve hard-to-find words using features
When to use this goal
For students who know words but often cannot retrieve them (long pauses, "that thing", describing around the word) on picture naming or in class. Generating features first (group, use, location) can trigger the word. Base the choice on naming tasks that compare naming speed and accuracy with receptive knowledge.
- Baseline
- Give a naming probe and confirm receptive knowledge of missed items by having the student point to them from a set. Use the missed-but-known items as the goal set. Record response time and error types (related word, description, no response). A student who does not know the words receptively needs vocabulary teaching, not retrieval work.
- Tips
- Score correct when the student names the target word within about 10 seconds, with or without self-generated features. Keep untreated probe items to check that gains spread beyond trained words. Teach the student to use the strategy in class discussion and with sl-exp-006.
- Limits
- Retrieval varies with fatigue, stress, and word frequency. Picture naming is a controlled task; class use needs separate checks. Students with acquired injuries may need a slower, more supported start.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, given 20 pictures the student recognizes receptively but did not name on a baseline naming probe, the student will use self-generated features (group, use, location) to retrieve and name each picture independently with at least 75% accuracy on pictures named, across 3 consecutive therapy sessions, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected during each therapy session.
Baseline: 35% accuracy.

Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.
Met: Condition. Stated.
Met: Unit fits the behavior. Percent accuracy fits this behavior.
Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.
Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.
Met: Method produces the metric. Opportunity (trial) recording gives percent accuracy data.
Met: Review timeframe. Stated.
Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.
Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Vocabulary & Semantics.
Met: Level of support. Defined.
Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.
Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
Short-term objectives (optional)
When are objectives required?Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.

- Score only items the student attempted unless the goal defines a fixed set of items. Use the same denominator every session.
- Percent = numerator ÷ denominator × 100. Round to one decimal place.
- Record the support actually provided, even if the goal is independent performance.
