Explain pre-taught unit words before the lesson
When to use this goal
For students in general education content classes who meet new unit words for the first time during the lesson and fall behind. The SLP or special educator pre-teaches 8 to 10 key words before the unit, and a short probe checks whether the student can explain them before class instruction starts. Base the choice on unit pre-tests and teacher input.
- Baseline
- Probe the next unit's 10 words before any teaching to get a true starting point, then probe again after pre-teaching. Compare with how many unit words the student explained by the end of past units. Choose words with the content teacher: those most needed to follow the lessons.
- Tips
- Score each word correct when the explanation or example shows the core meaning. Each unit gives a new word set, so progress shows up as higher post-teaching scores and faster learning across units. Share the words with the content teacher and family. sl-rec-003 covers identifying and defining unit vocabulary over the unit; this template measures the pre-teaching cycle.
- Limits
- Word sets differ in difficulty between units, so scores bounce; track the trend across several units. Explaining a word before the lesson does not ensure use in class writing or discussion.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, given 10 key words from an upcoming science or social studies unit, after 2 pre-teaching sessions and before the class lesson, the student will explain the meaning of each pre-taught word in their own words or with an example independently with at least 80% accuracy on pre-taught unit words explained, across 3 consecutive unit probes, as measured by curriculum-based measurement probes collected at the start and end of each unit's pre-teaching cycle.
Baseline: 20% accuracy.

Met: Condition. Stated.
Met: Unit fits the behavior. Percent accuracy fits this behavior.
Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.
Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.
Met: Method produces the metric. Curriculum-based measurement gives percent accuracy data.
Met: Review timeframe. Stated.
Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.
Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Vocabulary & Semantics.
Met: Level of support. Defined.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
Short-term objectives (optional)
When are objectives required?Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.

- Score only items the student attempted unless the goal defines a fixed set of items. Use the same denominator every session.
- Percent = numerator ÷ denominator × 100. Round to one decimal place.
- Record the support actually provided, even if the goal is independent performance.
