Finish picture analogies by spotting the link
When to use this goal
For students who can name familiar objects and simple relationships (what goes with what, part and whole, where things live) and are ready for analogies shown in pictures before verbal ones. Seeing the same link in two pairs is the core analogy skill. Present levels and vocabulary data, not grade, decide fit.
- Baseline
- Check that the student can name every picture and the link in each first pair when asked. Then probe 10 analogies and record choices and any explanation. Note which link types (function, part-whole, place, category) are easiest.
- Tips
- Score each analogy correct when the choice completes it; record the explanation separately to guide teaching. Teach links one type at a time, then mix them. Use pictures of objects the student knows from home and school. Saying the link aloud ("a bird lives in a nest, so a dog lives in a ...") is a strong teaching step.
- Limits
- Multiple-choice formats allow some guessing. Picture analogies rely on recognizing the pictures, which can be cultural; check items with the family. The template does not cover verbal or written analogies used in later grades.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, given 10 picture analogies (such as bird to nest, dog to a blank) with 3 picture answer choices, the student will choose the picture that completes the analogy and tell how the two pairs are linked independently with at least 80% accuracy on picture analogies, in 3 of 4 consecutive weekly probes, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected weekly.
Baseline: 40% accuracy.

Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.
Met: Condition. Stated.
Met: Unit fits the behavior. Percent accuracy fits this behavior.
Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.
Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.
Met: Method produces the metric. Opportunity (trial) recording gives percent accuracy data.
Met: Review timeframe. Stated.
Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.
Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Vocabulary & Semantics.
Met: Level of support. Defined.
Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.
Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
Short-term objectives (optional)
When are objectives required?Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.

- Score only items the student attempted unless the goal defines a fixed set of items. Use the same denominator every session.
- Percent = numerator ÷ denominator × 100. Round to one decimal place.
- Record the support actually provided, even if the goal is independent performance.
