Answer interview questions with reasons and examples
When to use this goal
For high school and transition-age students preparing for job, program, or college interviews whose answers are one short sentence. The target is answers built from a main idea plus a reason, condition, or example clause. Base the choice on mock interview recordings.
- Baseline
- Run one or two recorded mock interviews with common questions and score each answer for a linked reason, condition, or example. Note answers that were content-appropriate but grammatically simple, and answers that ran on with many "and"s.
- Tips
- Each question is one opportunity. Score the sentence structure, not whether the answer would impress an employer; content coaching belongs to the transition plan. Use questions the student will meet in their real interviews. Accept the student's dialect; the goal is linking ideas, not changing how they speak.
- Limits
- Mock interviews with familiar adults are easier than real ones; add unfamiliar interviewers before calling the goal met. The goal does not address interview behaviors like greetings and closings (see sl-prag-018).

- Record up to 5 opportunities per session, matching the goal's denominator.
- Define in advance what counts as an opportunity so every data collector records the same thing.
- Count only + marks toward the criterion unless the goal specifies prompted responses.
