Produce oral and nasal sounds with the matching resonance
When to use this goal
For students whose voice plan targets resonance (too much or too little nasal sound) and who first need to feel and hear the difference between oral and nasal sounds. Resonance goals follow a medical evaluation, which may include a cleft palate or craniofacial team. Base the choice on that team's plan.
- Baseline
- Present 20 syllable pairs and 20 words and judge each for resonance, using a nasal mirror or a listening tube for feedback. Confirm the medical evaluation: resonance differences can have structural causes that therapy cannot change, and the medical team decides whether therapy is indicated.
- Tips
- Score correct when the SLP judges the resonance matches the sound type. A nasal mirror (fogging on nasal sounds only) or a listening tube from the student's nose to the SLP's ear gives objective-ish feedback. Keep it playful ("nose sounds and mouth sounds"). This is a precursor to sl-voi-018 and sl-voi-019.
- Limits
- This template applies only when the medical team has found that therapy can help; structural causes need medical management first. Perceptual judgments of resonance are hard, and training is needed.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, given 20 consonant-vowel syllable pairs alternating oral and nasal consonants (such as "ba ma", "do no"), the student will produce the nasal sounds with nasal resonance and the oral sounds with oral resonance independently with at least 90% accuracy on oral and nasal productions with the matching resonance, across 3 consecutive therapy sessions, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected during each therapy session.
Baseline: 50% accuracy.

Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.
Met: Condition. Stated.
Met: Unit fits the behavior. Percent accuracy fits this behavior.
Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.
Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.
Met: Method produces the metric. Opportunity (trial) recording gives percent accuracy data.
Met: Review timeframe. Stated.
Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.
Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Voice.
Met: Level of support. Defined.
Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.
Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
Short-term objectives (optional)
When are objectives required?Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.

- Score only items the student attempted unless the goal defines a fixed set of items. Use the same denominator every session.
- Percent = numerator ÷ denominator × 100. Round to one decimal place.
- Record the support actually provided, even if the goal is independent performance.
