Make coffee or tea with a kettle
When to use this goal
For students who want to make their own hot drink, or serve one at a school coffee cart, and need an adult for the hot-water steps. Present levels and hand control decide fit, not grade; a kettle with an auto shut-off is the usual starting tool.
- Baseline
- Run the routine on at least 3 separate days in the setting where it will be measured before setting a target. Mark each step as independent, prompted (note the prompt type), or not done, and count only independent steps. Note the steps missed most often; they usually need direct teaching, not just more practice. Use the appliance the student will use at home; kettle and coffee maker steps differ, so pick one per goal.
- Tips
- A mug with a wide base and a kettle with a short spout reduce spills. If the student uses this at a school coffee cart, pair with a vocational-skills goal for serving customers.
- Limits
- Pouring hot water is a burn risk; staff stay in reach until the pour step is reliable. Does not cover stovetop kettles.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, in the school kitchen, with an electric kettle or a drip coffee maker and the student's chosen drink, the student will make a hot drink and turn off and unplug the appliance, performing at least 6 of 7 steps independently, on 4 of 5 observed sessions, as measured by a task-analysis checklist collected twice weekly.
Baseline: 2 of 7 steps independently.

- Write the date at the top of each session column. Mark each step I, S, or N.
- Total the number of I marks for the session. The goal counts steps completed independently (target: 6 of 7).
- Use the least intrusive prompt first and record the prompt actually needed.
