Tell who is doing what in a picture

K-2OpportunitiesTemplateReview and individualize before use. How templates are made
When to use this goal

For kindergarten and first grade students who label pictures with a noun (dog) instead of writing a sentence about the action. Present levels should show the student can name actions orally; the goal targets writing a subject and a verb together.

Baseline
Show five action pictures across a week and record exactly what the student writes. Count a sentence when it has a subject and an action verb that match the picture; invented spelling is fine. Note whether the student writes only labels, only verbs, or random words.
Tips
Clear action pictures (a child kicking a ball, a cat jumping) make the subject and verb easy to see. Have the student say the sentence before writing it every time. Accept any readable spelling; the target is the sentence parts.
Limits
The goal targets the subject and verb only; detail and punctuation come later. Pictures with several actions confuse the task. Students who cannot yet write any words need a dictation or word-card step first.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, given a photo or drawing that shows one person or animal doing a clear action, the student will write a sentence that names who is in the picture and what they are doing independently in at least 4 of 5 opportunities, across 3 consecutive weeks of data, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected weekly.

Baseline: 1 of 5 opportunities.

  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Opportunities fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Opportunity (trial) recording gives opportunities data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Sentence Construction.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.

Short-term objectives (optional)

When are objectives required?

Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.
