Point to where a sound came from

PK, K-2OpportunitiesTemplateReview and individualize before use. How templates are made
When to use this goal

For young children with two hearing aids, two implants, or one of each who detect sounds and are learning to locate them. Present levels in detection and the audiologist's view of localization potential decide fit.

Baseline
Play 10 sounds from varied places and record correct turns. Note whether errors favor one side, and share that with the audiologist.
Tips
Localization helps with safety and with finding who is talking. Children with hearing on one side may find it hard; adjust expectations with the audiologist.
Limits
Room echoes affect localization. The template measures listening for a student whose family chose listening as one route; it never replaces sign language or captions the student also uses.

Original IEP Atlas template based on general measurement principles; not copied from any goal bank. ID ac-aud-006.

Criterion

Number of opportunities in which the behavior is demonstrated, out of a fixed number.

Sample numbers. Replace them with the student's data.

Data collection

Each planned or naturally occurring opportunity is recorded as correct/independent, prompted, or not demonstrated.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, given a sound played from one of two or three places around the child (such as left, right, or behind), out of view, the student will turn toward or point to the place the sound came from independently in at least 8 of 10 opportunities, across 3 consecutive sessions, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected weekly.

Baseline: 3 of 10 opportunities.

  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Opportunities fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Opportunity (trial) recording gives opportunities data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Auditory Skills (Deaf & Hard of Hearing).

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.

Short-term objectives (optional)

When are objectives required?
