Start and stop moving with the music

PK, K-2OpportunitiesTemplateReview and individualize before use. How templates are made
When to use this goal

For young children who detect sound and are learning to notice when sound starts and stops, in group music and movement. Present levels in detection decide fit.

Baseline
Count stops and starts in a game (10 changes) and record which the child responded to without watching others.
Tips
Children often copy peers; place the child where peers are not in view, or count only responses before others move.
Limits
Copying peers can hide detection problems. The template measures listening for a student whose family chose listening as one route; it never replaces sign language or captions the student also uses.

Original IEP Atlas template based on general measurement principles; not copied from any goal bank. ID ac-aud-008.

Skill

What the student will do

Something an adult can see, count or time.

Condition

When or under what conditions

Support

Support allowed

Criterion

Number of opportunities in which the behavior is demonstrated, out of a fixed number.

Sample numbers. Replace them with the student's data.

Criterion wording

Data collection

An adult observes and records the defined behavior during a specified activity.

How often data are collected
Mastery rule

How many measurements must meet the criterion.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, during a freeze-dance or musical game, when the music stops and starts without visual cues, the student will stop moving when the music stops and start again when it starts independently in at least 8 of 10 opportunities, across 3 consecutive sessions, as measured by direct observation collected twice weekly.

Baseline: 3 of 10 opportunities.

Measurability check11 of 11 met
  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Opportunities fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Direct observation gives opportunities data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Auditory Skills (Deaf & Hard of Hearing).

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.

Short-term objectives (optional)

When are objectives required?

Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.
