Take devices off for water and rough play

K-2, 3-5OpportunitiesTemplateReview and individualize before use. How templates are made
When to use this goal

For young students who forget to remove or protect hearing devices before water play, swimming, or rough games. Present levels in the routine and in remembering activity rules decide fit.

Baseline
List the week's water and active activities and record whether the student protected the device on their own. Ask the family which activities matter at home.
Tips
Some devices are water resistant; follow the audiologist's guidance. Students may still need visual access during these activities; plan signs or gestures with the coach.
Limits
The template covers device protection, not access during the activity. Hearing technology is one access route the family and student chose; it does not replace sign language, captions, or other visual access where the student uses them.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, before swimming, water play, sprinklers, or a rainy-day outdoor activity, the student will take off the device or put on the protective band and store the device in the case before starting independently in 4 of 4 opportunities, across 4 consecutive weeks, as measured by direct observation collected weekly.

Baseline: 1 of 4 opportunities.

  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Opportunities fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Direct observation gives opportunities data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.
