Use a live caption app in conversation

6-8, 9-12OpportunitiesTemplateReview and individualize before use. How templates are made
When to use this goal

For students who are deaf or hard of hearing who use a speech-to-text caption app on a phone or tablet in conversations, clubs, and group work. Present levels in reading speed and device use decide fit.

Baseline
Track five conversations where captions would help and record whether the student used them. Ask how accurate the app was.
Tips
Automatic captions make errors, especially with names and noise; teach the student to ask when captions do not make sense.
Limits
Apps do not replace professional captioning or interpreters for instruction. Hearing technology is one access route the family and student chose; it does not replace sign language, captions, or other visual access where the student uses them.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, during a group conversation, club meeting, or small-group activity without an interpreter or captioner, the student will open the caption app, place the device where it picks up the speakers, and read the captions to follow and join the talk independently in at least 4 of 5 opportunities, across 3 consecutive weeks, as measured by direct observation collected weekly.

Baseline: 1 of 5 opportunities.

  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Opportunities fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Direct observation gives opportunities data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Hearing Technology Self-Management.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
