Show a substitute how the microphone works

6-8, 3-5OpportunitiesTemplateReview and individualize before use. How templates are made
When to use this goal

For students who use a remote microphone and lose access when a substitute or new staff member does not know the equipment. Present levels in device knowledge and in speaking up decide fit.

Baseline
Log substitute days for a month and whether the microphone was used. Practice sessions with unfamiliar adults add opportunities.
Tips
Add the microphone to every sub plan. The student's explanation is a backup and a self-advocacy skill.
Limits
Substitute days are unpredictable, so data build slowly. Hearing technology is one access route the family and student chose; it does not replace sign language, captions, or other visual access where the student uses them.

What the student will do

Something an adult can see, count or time.

When or under what conditions

Support

Support allowed

Criterion

Number of opportunities in which the behavior is demonstrated, out of a fixed number.

Sample numbers. Replace them with the student's data.

Criterion wording

Data collection

Each occurrence of a clearly defined behavior is tallied during a fixed observation period.

How often data are collected
Mastery rule

How many measurements must meet the criterion.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, when a substitute teacher or new staff member starts the class, the student will give the adult the microphone, show how to turn it on, clip it, and mute it, and check that it works independently in at least 3 of 4 opportunities, across 2 consecutive grading periods, as measured by frequency recording collected monthly from a request log.

Baseline: 1 of 4 opportunities.

Measurability check11 of 11 met
  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Opportunities fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Frequency (event) recording gives opportunities data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Hearing Technology Self-Management.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.

Short-term objectives (optional)

When are objectives required?

Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.
