Sign the names of familiar objects and actions
When to use this goal
For young children learning ASL as a first or second language at school. Present levels from a sign vocabulary checklist decide the words; many children know far more signs at home or with Deaf family members, so ask.
- Baseline
- Probe 20 target signs from home and school routines. Accept the child's own form of a sign when it is consistent and recognizable, as with early spoken words.
- Tips
- Choose words the child needs every day. Fluent signing models (Deaf adults, Deaf mentors) matter most for vocabulary growth.
- Limits
- Production at this age is still developing; small handshape differences are normal. ASL is a complete language; this template measures one access or language skill, and the student's broader language goals belong in expressive and receptive language with sign as the mode.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, given pictures or real objects of familiar items and actions from daily routines, the student will sign the name of the object or action independently with at least 80% accuracy on target signs produced, in 3 of 4 consecutive weekly probes, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected weekly.
Baseline: 30% accuracy.

Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.
Met: Condition. Stated.
Met: Unit fits the behavior. Percent accuracy fits this behavior.
Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.
Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.
Met: Method produces the metric. Opportunity (trial) recording gives percent accuracy data.
Met: Review timeframe. Stated.
Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.
Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Sign Language & Visual Communication.
Met: Level of support. Defined.
Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.
Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
Short-term objectives (optional)
When are objectives required?Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.

- Score only items the student attempted unless the goal defines a fixed set of items. Use the same denominator every session.
- Percent = numerator ÷ denominator × 100. Round to one decimal place.
- Record the support actually provided, even if the goal is independent performance.
