Follow signed directions in daily routines
When to use this goal
For young signing children who are building receptive ASL in classroom routines. Present levels in receptive sign vocabulary decide the directions.
- Baseline
- Record 10 signed directions across a day: followed alone, after a repeat, or after a point. Note one-step and two-step directions separately.
- Tips
- Make sure the child can see the signer before signing; that is the adult's job. Context helps at this age, which is fine.
- Limits
- ASL is a complete language; this template measures one access or language skill, and the student's broader language goals belong in expressive and receptive language with sign as the mode.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, during classroom routines, when a signing adult gives a one- or two-step direction in ASL, the student will carry out the signed direction independently in at least 8 of 10 opportunities, on 4 of 5 observed days, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected daily during routines.

- Record up to 10 opportunities per session, matching the goal's denominator.
- Define in advance what counts as an opportunity so every data collector records the same thing.
- Count only + marks toward the criterion unless the goal specifies prompted responses.
