Take turns in a signed conversation

K-2, 3-5OpportunitiesTemplateReview and individualize before use. How templates are made
When to use this goal

For young signers who sign over a partner or miss turn signals in conversation. Present levels in signed conversation decide fit.

Baseline
Observe a conversation and record each turn change as smooth, overlapped, or missed. Signed overlap norms differ from spoken ones; a fluent signer can help judge.
Tips
Brief overlap is normal in signed conversation; target turns that cut off the partner's message.
Limits
ASL is a complete language; this template measures one access or language skill, and the student's broader language goals belong in expressive and receptive language with sign as the mode.

Original IEP Atlas template based on general measurement principles; not copied from any goal bank. ID ac-sig-010.

Criterion

Number of opportunities in which the behavior is demonstrated, out of a fixed number.

Sample numbers. Replace them with the student's data.

Criterion wording

Data collection

An adult observes and records the defined behavior during a specified activity.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, during a signed conversation with a peer or adult about a shared activity, the student will wait for the partner's turn to end, then respond to what they signed independently in at least 6 of 8 opportunities, on 4 of 5 observed days, as measured by direct observation collected twice weekly.

Baseline: 2 of 8 opportunities.

  • Observable behavior

  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Opportunities fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Direct observation gives opportunities data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Sign Language & Visual Communication.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.
