Speak only during their turn in a group discussion
When to use this goal
For students who interrupt peers or talk over others in discussions, book clubs, or group projects. Base the choice on a count of interruptions in one discussion. Conversation skills more broadly belong to pragmatic-language and peer-interaction.
- Baseline
- During 2 discussions, record the student's first 10 contributions: waited for the speaker to finish, or interrupted (started speaking while another person was mid-sentence). Note whether the group had a turn rule; interruptions without a rule in place are not fair opportunities.
- Tips
- Define an interruption as starting to speak while another person is mid-sentence; overlapping "yes" or laughing does not count. Give the student a way to hold an idea (a sticky note) so waiting does not mean losing the thought. Keep turns short for everyone so waits are brief in the early weeks.
- Limits
- Unstructured discussions have no clear turns and cannot be scored this way. Does not measure the quality or relevance of what is said; see pragmatic-language for topic maintenance.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, during a structured class discussion with a turn-taking rule (talking piece, hand signal, or round-robin), the student will wait until the current speaker finishes before speaking independently in at least 8 of 10 opportunities, across 3 consecutive weekly data summaries, as measured by frequency recording collected twice weekly during a discussion, first 10 turns taken, summarized weekly.

- Record up to 10 opportunities per session, matching the goal's denominator.
- Define in advance what counts as an opportunity so every data collector records the same thing.
- Count only + marks toward the criterion unless the goal specifies prompted responses.
