Follow a direction given to the whole class
When to use this goal
For students who follow directions addressed to them by name but not directions given to the whole group. Base the choice on data comparing individual and group directions. Attention and listening-comprehension goals may be needed alongside.
- Baseline
- During 3 lessons, tally 10 group directions each and whether the student followed within 15 seconds, followed after peers started, or needed an individual repeat. Also record where the student was sitting and whether the teacher used an attention signal first.
- Tips
- Count following after watching peers as success for this goal; using peers as a cue is the skill. Teachers can help by using an attention signal and by waiting 10 seconds before giving individual repeats. Pair with a sustained-attention goal if the student misses directions because they are not oriented to the teacher.
- Limits
- Group directions vary in clarity; data from a teacher who gives several directions at once are not comparable with data from one who gives them singly. Does not separate not hearing from not following; a listening-comprehension check is useful.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, when the teacher gives a one-step direction to the whole class, the student will independently follow the group direction within 15 seconds without an individual repeat in at least 8 of 10 opportunities, across 3 consecutive weekly data summaries, as measured by direct observation collected 3 times per week, 10 group directions each, summarized weekly.

- Record up to 10 opportunities per session, matching the goal's denominator.
- Define in advance what counts as an opportunity so every data collector records the same thing.
- Count only + marks toward the criterion unless the goal specifies prompted responses.
