Accept the answer after asking for a change
When to use this goal
For students who can ask for a change to a direction but keep arguing, repeat the request, or stop working when the answer is no. Fit depends on behavior data about what follows a denied request, not on grade. Pair with bh-dir-029 once the request itself is in place.
- Baseline
- Log each declined request for one to two weeks: what the student did in the next minute (started, repeated the request, argued, stopped working). Count the repeats; a student who asks three or four times may need a clear "ask once" rule taught before the goal starts.
- Tips
- Decline requests calmly and give the reason once. Offer a small alternative when possible ("not now, but you can choose your seat tomorrow"); accepting the alternative counts. Praise the start of work right away. The goal is not to stop the student from asking; it is to make asking safe because the answer will be respected both ways.
- Limits
- Only scores declined requests, so a student who rarely asks will produce few data points. Does not measure the quality of the original request (see bh-dir-029) or anger after the response (social-emotional area).

By the annual IEP review date, after the student asks to change a direction and the adult answers no or offers a different option, the student will independently start the original direction or the offered option within 1 minute and without repeating the request in at least 4 of 5 opportunities, across 3 consecutive weekly data summaries, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected each declined request, summarized weekly.

- Record up to 5 opportunities per session, matching the goal's denominator.
- Define in advance what counts as an opportunity so every data collector records the same thing.
- Count only + marks toward the criterion unless the goal specifies prompted responses.
