Sign or show "all done" to stop

PK, K-2OpportunitiesTemplateReview and individualize before use. How templates are made
When to use this goal

For young students who throw, sweep materials off the table, or cry to end an activity, and whose FBA shows escape. Fit depends on communication present levels, not age. The SLP should confirm the sign, word, or symbol.

Baseline
Record five times the student wanted to stop and what they did. Pick activities where stopping is fine to start with (snack, play). Check that the student can produce the sign or reach the symbol.
Tips
End the activity right away when the student asks at first. Later, teach "one more, then all done" so short tasks get finished. Families can use the same sign at home. Pair with a reduction goal only if the plan counts the problem behavior.
Limits
Ending every activity on request is not workable long term; plan how a little more work will be added. Not a fit for activities that must finish (washing hands).

Criterion

Number of opportunities in which the behavior is demonstrated, out of a fixed number.

Sample numbers. Replace them with the student's data.

Data collection

Each planned or naturally occurring opportunity is recorded as correct/independent, prompted, or not demonstrated.

How many measurements must meet the criterion.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, during a table activity when the student shows a defined sign of wanting to stop (pushing materials, turning away), the student will sign, say, or touch the "all done" symbol to end the activity independently in at least 4 of 5 opportunities, on 3 consecutive data collection days, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected daily across routines.

Baseline: 0 of 5 opportunities.

  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Opportunities fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Opportunity (trial) recording gives opportunities data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Replacement Behaviors.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.

Short-term objectives (optional)

When are objectives required?

Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.
