Reduce spitting at people

K-2, 3-5FrequencyTemplateReview and individualize before use. How templates are made
When to use this goal

A reduction goal for students who spit at or toward people, based on event recording and an FBA (often escape from demands or protest). Pair with a protest or break replacement (bh-rep-018 or bh-rep-001).

Baseline
Count each spit toward a person for five days and note the antecedent and what adults did after. Separate spitting while eating or drooling, which is not counted.
Tips
Valid only with a replacement goal. Respond with minimal attention and no big reaction. Staff may need protective steps written in the plan for health reasons. Graph replacements and spitting together.
Limits
Frequency does not show who was targeted; the plan may separate peers and adults. Health concerns (illness spread) may need nurse input.

Original IEP Atlas template based on general measurement principles; not copied from any goal bank. ID bh-rep-054.

Criterion

Number of times a defined behavior occurs during a set observation period.

Sample numbers. Replace them with the student's data.

Keep every observation the same length.

Criterion wording

Data collection

Each occurrence of a clearly defined behavior is tallied during a fixed observation period.

How often data are collected
Mastery rule

How many measurements must meet the criterion.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, across the school day with the protest and break requests available, the student will reduce spitting at or toward a person (as defined in the behavior plan) to no more than 1 time per school day, with the protest or break request honored every time it is used, across 4 consecutive weekly data summaries, as measured by frequency recording collected daily, every occurrence, summarized weekly.

Baseline: 8 times per school day.

Measurability check11 of 11 met
  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Frequency fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Frequency (event) recording gives frequency data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Replacement Behaviors.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.

Short-term objectives (optional)

When are objectives required?

Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.
