Request a break at the job site
When to use this goal
For transition-age students in a work placement who leave the work area, stop working, or get upset when tired or overwhelmed, and whose FBA shows escape from the task or setting. Fit depends on job-site data, not grade. The break must follow the workplace's own rules.
- Baseline
- Record five precursor episodes at the job site and what followed. Learn the workplace's break rules first, and teach those rules rather than a school version.
- Tips
- Talk with the supervisor ahead of time about short breaks as a reasonable accommodation. The return is part of the skill; pair with bh-rep-010 if returning is hard. Fade the job coach as requests become steady.
- Limits
- Workplaces vary; some do not allow unscheduled breaks, which changes the goal to using scheduled ones well. Does not measure job performance.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, during a community work placement when the student shows a precursor named in the plan, the student will tell the supervisor or job coach they need a short break, go to the break area, and come back when the break ends independently in at least 4 of 5 opportunities, across 4 consecutive work shifts, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected each precursor episode at the job site.
Baseline: 1 of 5 opportunities.

Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.
Met: Condition. Stated.
Met: Unit fits the behavior. Opportunities fits this behavior.
Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.
Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.
Met: Method produces the metric. Opportunity (trial) recording gives opportunities data.
Met: Review timeframe. Stated.
Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.
Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Replacement Behaviors.
Met: Level of support. Defined.
Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.
Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
Short-term objectives (optional)
When are objectives required?Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.

- Record up to 5 opportunities per session, matching the goal's denominator.
- Define in advance what counts as an opportunity so every data collector records the same thing.
- Count only + marks toward the criterion unless the goal specifies prompted responses.
