Stay with the group during walks inside the building

When to use this goal

For students who run ahead, lag far behind, or leave the line during hallway transitions. Base the choice on counting transitions with and without separation. Line-routine details (voice, hands) are in classroom-expectations; this goal is about proximity.

Baseline
Record 5 or more walks: stayed within 2 arm's lengths the whole way, separated once, or separated more than once or ran. Note where separation happens (past the gym doors, near the playground exit); those spots become stopping points.
Tips
Define the distance (2 arm's lengths, or a specific spot in line) so every adult scores the same way. Place stopping points before any exit door. Reinforce arriving with the group. A student who bolts from the group needs the reduction goal bh-saf-015 and an emergency plan alongside this one.
Limits
A whole-walk score means a single step away fails the trial; for students with many separations, start with a count of separations per walk instead. Does not cover outdoor or community walks (bh-saf-002).

Criterion

Number of opportunities in which the behavior is demonstrated, out of a fixed number.

Sample numbers. Replace them with the student's data.

Data collection

An adult observes and records the defined behavior during a specified activity.

How many measurements must meet the criterion.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, during a class walk between rooms with an adult at the front and back of the line, the student will stay within 2 arm's lengths of the group for the whole walk independently in 5 of 5 opportunities, across 3 consecutive weekly data summaries, as measured by direct observation collected daily, each walk, summarized weekly.

Baseline: 1 of 5 opportunities.

  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Opportunities fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Direct observation gives opportunities data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Safety Behaviors.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.

Short-term objectives (optional)

When are objectives required?

Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.
