Stay with the group on outdoor and community outings

When to use this goal

For students who wander or run during field trips, community-based instruction, or outdoor walks. Fits after bh-saf-001 is stable in the building. Base the choice on outings with a count of separations. Street crossing and travel skills are in community-safety.

Baseline
Record 3 to 5 outings or outdoor walks: stayed within 10 feet the whole time, separated once and returned on a call, or separated and had to be retrieved. Note what pulled the student away (water, animals, a store display) and plan stopping points before those spots.
Tips
Preview the route with pictures, assign a job (carrying the list, holding the door), and plan stopping points before crossings and exits. Define the distance in a way an adult can judge quickly. Students with a history of bolting need an emergency plan and a 1:1 adult regardless of this goal's progress.
Limits
Outings are infrequent, so mastery is counted in outings. Scoring the whole outing as one opportunity is coarse; for frequent separations, count separations per outing instead. Never the only safety measure for a student who runs.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, during a community outing with an assigned adult and a group of up to 6 students, the student will stay within sight and within 10 feet of the assigned adult for the whole outing independently in 5 of 5 opportunities, across 5 consecutive outings, as measured by direct observation collected each outing, at least twice monthly.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Opportunities fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Direct observation gives opportunities data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Safety Behaviors.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.
